Pedacito de Tierra is a powerful new chamber work by acclaimed Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón, commissioned and produced by saxophonist and cultural organizer José Antonio Zayas Cabán. Performed by the {Trés} Chamber Music Trio, the piece explores migration, identity, and belonging through the voices of Puerto Ricans in Minnesota.
Rooted in oral histories collected from the Twin Cities’ Puerto Rican community, the 11-minute work blends classical textures with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and layered electronics, creating a musical landscape that is as intimate as it is expansive. Each performance is accompanied by a visual exhibit and interactive storytelling experience, including a digital ArcGIS Story Map and live post-concert conversations (at select venues).
The project is supported by the American Composers Forum and the Minnesota Historical Society, and is part of a larger effort to uplift the stories of diasporic communities through music, memory, and place.
Pedacito de Tierra was featured in , a podcast by the Minnesota Historical Society. The episode explores Puerto Rican identity, music, and migration through the voices of José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Tearra Oso.
